Planting Water Workshop

Planting Water: Hydrological literacy for rainwater harvesting, water reuse, conservation, filtration and purification.
Offered: July 29-30-31, 2011
Location: Commonweal Garden, Bolinas CA

This is a unique opportunity to dive deeply into the skills, theory and hands-on practicum of rainwater harvesting, water reuse, public policy and cutting edge information as it pertains to clean water access for wildlife, community, domestic and landscape use.

The instructor team offers a diverse set of skills, vision and experience designed to round out a full curriculum of hydro-logical literacy. This 3-day training will include a combination of presentations, panels, slide shows, tours and hands-on activities.
Topics will include:
• A panel discussion on the big picture–community and global water policies, codes, watershed funding, coalitions and more…
• Rainwater harvesting from roof water, as well as, keyline patterning and broad acre rainwater harvesting and filtration.
• Earthworks: Pond building catch basins and rain gardens. We will build a rain water run-off catch basin and plant with a host of multi-functional plants for this climate.
• Integrating multi-functional planting systems for dryland climates.
• Water conservation techniques.
• Grey water and onsite water purification and re-use in the landscape.
• Fog harvesting: We will set up a fog harvesting system for watering a cliff side landscape.
Commonweal Garden offers many innovative and cutting edge water harvesting and conservation examples employed on the farm.

Course Schedule
The course will take place from 10am, Friday, July 29 through 5pm on Sunday, July 31, 2011.
Registration: 9–9:45am, Friday, July 29
Arrival: Please arrive by 9am, Friday, July 29, to allow time for registration and to get settled. The course will begin promptly at 10am.
Departure: The course ends at 5pm on Sunday, July 31. Please book your flights and rides out appropriately.
