DESCRIPTION:Plant the Rain\nWater-Harvesting Earthworks & Greywater Workshop with Brad Lancaster\nWoodbine Ecology Center\nSedalia\, CO\n August 17–19\, 2013\n\n\n\nFull 3-Day Water-Harvesting Course: $425 \nEarly-Bird Discounted Price (by July 15): $375\n\n1-Day Greywater-only Option (August 19): $175\n.\nEARTHWORKS: How to Plant the Rain (and Other On-site Waters) to Grow Sustainable Abundance\nIn order to better see the whole and our place within the hydrologic cycle\, each earthworkshop begins with participants learning the Water-Harvesting Principles; basic watergy facts; integration of sun\, water\, and community; oasis zones; how to think like a plant; and various earthworks strategies. We then assess the site\, identifying water resources and watersheds\, asking and answering relevant site-specific questions\, and testing our observations with simple tools. Equipped with a deeper understanding of the site and its water\, we then place and create water-harvesting earthworks\, guided by the Principles\, key integration techniques\, and the goal of living within the site’s sustainable water budget. Depending on the site\, typical earthworks created in an workshop can include infiltration basins/rain gardens\, one-rock check dams\, contour berm ‘n basins/swales or boomerang berm ‘n basins\, and terracing. Time and resources permitting\, we will plant guilds of vegetation within/beside the earthworks and view a presentation of earthworks from around the world.\nGREYWATER Assessment and Harvesting Class\nThis class begins with Brad’s greywater-harvesting presentation\, followed by a hands-on site assessment of greywater-harvesting potential\, analyzing the accessibility\, quality\, and volume of greywater that can be harvested on the site. The assessment will include how to make and use a simple\, effective\, cheap water level that can be used in creating all water-harvesting earthworks. Simple calculations and a soil percolation test will be used to determine the size of greywater-harvesting earthworks so they work\, don’t flood\, and don’t puddle. DESCRIPTION:Join Brad and the San Diego Sustainable Living Institute for this hands-on water-harvesting workshop!\n\nWHEN:\nJune 29–30\, 2013\n9 am – 5 pm each day\nWHERE:\nBlue Sky Ranch\nLakeside\, California\nHOW MUCH:\n$350 for both days\n$200 for one day only\nWHAT:\nThis 2-day workshop will teach people how to plant water back in the landscape to create abundant gardens that not only provide food\, but also shade\, habitat\, community\, and more—using rainwater and greywater!  When most people think about rainwater harvesting\, the first thing that comes to mind is usually a barrel or a tank.  However\, there is a far cheaper\, more widely applicable\, and larger storage capacity method for harvesting rainwater: passive rain gardens or earthworks.  A rain garden or earthwork is a term for sculpting the landscape to direct rainwater to where you need it and away from where you do not.  These rain gardens then fill up and accumulate water every time it rains.  There is no need to mess with hoses\, plumbing parts\, or expensive pumps. Just stand back and watch rainwater runoff walkways\, driveways\, patios\, and other hardscapes right to where you need it.  In this way you can double or even triple the amount of water that your plants would naturally receive and eliminate erosion at the same time!\nCombining seasonal rainwater harvesting with year round perennial household greywater ensures that our gardens and landscapes are hydrated and water abundant.  The greywater portion of the workshop will train people on how to best use greywater with the least amount of effort\, materials\, and energy.  Greywater is any water generated from a shower\, tub\, washing machine\, or sink that is re-used again for irrigation or other uses.  Brad will show you how to design and install a simple\, gravity fed greywater system from start to finish.\nIn this workshop\, participants will learn everything they need to start harvesting rainwater and greywater.  It will be a great opportunity for those with previous experience in Permaculture to take their knowledge to the next level\, in addition to providing an excellent foundation to those just starting out.  There will be a mix of theory and plenty of hands-on applications as all participants will assess the site and then install passive rainwater and greywater systems.\nFMI: sdsustainable.org/event/rainwater-harvesting-earthworks
