Check out this great short music video on Technicians for Sustainability installing a grid-tied solar power system after transporting themselves, tools, and materials to the site via bicycle and bicycle trailers. The “grid-tie” system puts solar-generated electricity back on the grid during the day (running the meter backward) when the sun is shining. Then at night it will pull off the grid (and the meter runs forward). And so the net result, at the end of the month is either no electric bill or a reduced amount. Note the electric meter in the video spinning backward after the system is hooked up.

FYI - In Tucson, AZ such a system costs about $6,500 per kilowatt with rebates. Then you get a $3,000 rebate off your taxes.
