Jodi, you’re exactly right. The water was hauled up from the underground cisterns with a bucket and a rope.

Hi Brad,
Wonderful story on Old Jeddah. Can see similar applications to Australia. Gov’t here mainly going de-sal way rather than each household harvesting own water. Similar system (to Old Jeddah) exists in Malta, according to a Maltese friend of mine.

How does the water get out, once stored in the cistern?
I’m imagining tunnels underground full of water and no pumps… was it pulled up with buckets like old wells?
